It’s hard to believe it only took 2 months to rebuild a home . . .We left the house in great shape, everything painted, two more coats of varnish on the floor . . . It took us 2 months, and it took Cynthia and Dan 16 . . .Cynthia was so thankful. She thanks everyone who had a part in the project. I thank everyone. I even have people thank me for letting them work on the home. -- David Kramer, Concord, MA
When we met [Julian], he was on the “heartbreak hill” of a construction project, and needed a good “tail wind.” Our efforts were person-to-person, but started to become political when we saw all the vacant houses in his neighborhood. Our work on his home was an example. --Dan Kagan, Belmont, MA To the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast: Thank you for teaching me that after losing every earthly possession it is still possible to give of yourself to those who have lost more . . . Thank you for teaching me that grace is possible in situations that we lack an adequate vocabulary to describe. . . --Sue Cambria, Orange, CT More than a dozen groups, and 300 volunteers in total, have worked with Gulf Coast Works (formerly Bridge to Biloxi) since early 2005 to help clean up and rebuild in Mississippi and New Orleans. Some of these groups come from Middlesex School, Trinitarian Congregational Church, Concord Academy, First Parish, Kerem Shalom, Concord-Carlisle High School and more. Informal groups of individual volunteers also go down to work, particularly to help with specific rebuilding projects. Despite any initial worries, most volunteers are deeply moved by their experiences, and often choose to volunteer more than once. Many of their personal stories and photos are found in our GCW Blog and photo gallery! Work trips are scheduled all year long. Trips take place primarily during fall and spring months. |
